Cooking with Chanlyn

Hey guys this is Chanlyn, I am Max's wife and I love to cook. Normally when you think about cooking outdoors it's hot dogs, burgers and steaks, but you know the list is limitless. I don't know about you guys but when we camp I always have a cooler or two full of fresh food that I bring with me, and we for the most part keep a fire stoked and going it helps keep the bugs away but it is also ready for when it's time to feed this crew of mine. So let's get started with a simple recipe for a one pot breakfast to get you up and going.

Mountain Morning Breakfast
1 pound mild pork sausage (such as Jimmy Dean®)
1 onion, chopped
1 red bell pepper chopped
1 green bell pepper chopped
8 oz sliced mushrooms
1 clove garlic, minced
1 (2 pound) package frozen shredded hash brown potatoes
12 eggs, beaten
1 (16 ounce) package shredded Cheddar cheese
 Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Build a campfire and allow the fire to burn until it has accumulated a bed of coals.

Cook and stir the sausage, onion, and garlic in a 12-inch cast iron Dutch oven with lid, raised over the coals to medium-high heat, until the sausage is no longer pink and the onion is tender.

Stir in the red bell pepper, green bell pepper,salt, pepper and hash brown potatoes until evenly mixed. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the hash browns are hot and the peppers are tender, about 15 minutes.

Pour the beaten eggs evenly over the top of the potatoes, allowing them to sink into the potatoes. Cover the Dutch oven, and place 6 to 9 coals underneath, and 12 to 18 on top. Allow to bake until the eggs are firm, about 40 minutes.Sprinkle with Cheddar cheese, cover, and continue cooking until the cheese has melted, about 5 minutes.

      I had the chance this past Thursday to shoot the AR500 steel from Shoot steel.com.With all the rain we have been having over the last few weeks I have not had the opportunity to get out and shoot. Now that we have had a some clear weather we was able to shoot some good steel. Hiking at Issaqueena Falls

This is the water fall that the legend of issaqueena hid under to evade her capture

          My family and I traveled to Issaqueena Fall over the the holidays . Now the legends goes like this-  Issaqueena was a creek Indian maiden named Issaqueena who had been captured by the Cherokees. She met and fell in love with a white trader named Allan Francis. When she learned that the Cherokee were planning an attack on the fort where her beloved lived, she road a horse 96 miles to warn the white settlers . When the Cherokee came after her Issqueena saw them coming and knowing that they believed evil spirits lived in the water falls but instead she hid on a ledge behind the water falls. she remained there until they were gone and it was safe thus tricking her pursuer.You can find this water fall and more near the city of Walhalla in Oconee county's S.C   P.S this is how the city of 96 got its name.

Lost Treasure

            I love looking around in thrift stores and going to auctions. When looking around, I look for knives,camping gear and are survival gear. So one day my wife and I  were looking around in a shop and in a glass case I noticed a knife and I asked to see it and it looked really bad so I gave it back to the lady. After looking around not finding much I ask what would she take for the knife not knowing what kind it was . she said she didn't know what to ask for it so she called her husband and he said $4 .Not being to much I gave that for it. I've dabbled in making knives before and using  Bras so to polish and clean them up. This is some thing that most of the military has used to shine all brass and metal . So I used this with sand paper to sand the rust off and shine the blade and brass . After cleaning it up best that I could it looked like it was a Uncle Henry that's not a real high end knife but it is a good one. Now when you see the pictures you will some pitting in the blade the pitting was deep and I couldn't get it all out but over all it looks nice. I've got an old boy scout knife that I will be working on later. The leather sheath  was made by a shoe maker he done a good job

Table Rock

     This past weekend my wife and I took a trip upstate on the motorcycle to Table Rock State Park in Pickens, SC.  Table Rock is a very nice place located  in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.                  According to history the mountains got their name from the Lower Cherokee Nation, who called them Sah-ka-na-ga  which translated means The Great Hillls of God, but Table Rock got it's name due to the eating rituals of the chief . He would sitand eat from a rock that resembled a table top at every meal, these same meals came from the established hunting camps of the area. This land was part of the Hopewell Treaty that was signed in 1785. As it sits now it's a beautiful park with waterfalls and a places to camp and swim. It also has plenty of trails for hiking and looking out at amazing views.

Maximum Survivalist PSK (Personal Survival Kit)

This kit is designed to aid you if you’re faced with a survival situation. It should remain on your person at all times. It’s good to practice and familiarize yourself with the kit prior to taking it out in the field with you.

The survival tin is painted in a tactical color to help with camouflage for military personal. If you are a civilian, affixing a brightly colored piece of tape will aid if finding your kit if dropped in the wilderness. The tin can be used for boiling water or cooking food in a pinch. The inner lid of the kit can be used as a signaling device and can be polished with moist dirt to make it even brighter.

Everything chosen for this kit has multiple purposes. Let’s talk about the contents and uses.

We chose a BIC Lighter because of its reliability and after fuel runs out the flint can be used to spark the Tinder Quik tabs. If you are injured having a one-handed fire lighting device is critical, another reason why we chose the BIC. In the event of a malfunction of the lighter, we have enclosed a fire steel. The fire steel can be used with the razor knife to emit a shower of sparks onto your tinder.

The included tinder is Tinder Quik tabs. They are waterproof and just need to be peeled apart on one end to work. Inside the fishing kit is extra cotton tinder, its enclosed in the vial to help with waterproofing. The Triple Antibiotic ointment can be applied to the cotton tinder to help as a flame extender. The Duct tape can also be stripped apart to be used as tinder with the lighter.

Signaling comes in the form of a whistle. 3 short blast is the universal signal for help. This is a pealess design that works well. As I mentioned above the lid of the tin can be used as a signaling mirror. For night time signaling you can use the LED light included.

The Button compass has been added to help aid in navigation. Find a cardinal direction and head that way. This will keep you from walking in circles.

The orange handled utility knife is your cutting tool. Its handle will keep it getting lost on the forest floor. It can be affixed to the LED light keychain to prevent it from being lost. There is no substitution for a fixed blade knife and I suggest having one of those on you as well.

The fishing kit can be used to catch fish as well as small birds.

The paracord bracelet can be taken out of the kit and worn daily if you so choose. It was designed to be the cordage for this kit. You can construct a shelter with it, make a bow drill fire kit, or used to make more fishing line by using the inner strands. Really its uses are endless. The zip ties can also be used for gear repair or shelter construction.

On the medical side, we’ve included bandaids and antibiotic. To help with small cuts. There is water purification tablets as well.
